🍀”World Meteorological Day”, aka “World Climate Day” or “Earth Hour”, is recognized and observed on 23rd March annually. Although this day might have some similarities with “International Day of Forests” on 21st March, “World Water Day” on 22nd March & “World Environment Day” on June 5th, it holds equal significance and no less appreciation while focusing on Meteorology.

â€ĸNow what is Meteorology and who is a Meteorologist? 

Meteorology is the branch of science studying the Earth’s atmosphere, focusing on short-term weather forecasting and atmospheric phenomena. And the person working in this field is known as a meteorologist.

It is noticeable to the present world that environmental pollution, frequent emissions and increase of CFC (Chloro-Flouro-Carbon) gases, excess dependency and uses of AI (Artificial Intelligence), using deadly weapons in wars, dumping of dangerous nuclear, radioactive wastes, lack of proper implementation of reduce-reuse-recycle policy and drastically alarming augmentation of climate change are eventually affecting the meteorological condition of our Mother Earth. The gradual decline of meteorological state of our planet ultimately results in record-high greenhouse gas concentrations, accelerating polar snow/ice melt, and rise of ocean temperature. This condition also prominently contributes to the creation of holes in the ozone layer, intense & rapidly developing weather systems, including strengthening winter storms, high-risk severe weather events, heat domes, desertification, acidification & increase of salinity in water bodies, more frequency of natural catastrophes like cyclones, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, droughts, irregular rainfall, river and soil erosions, submerging of lands, loss of habitat for humans & other living organisms, imbalance & destructions of ecology & biodiversity, etc.

As of March 2026, the meteorological factors on Earth is dominated by the necessity to monitor and predict such increasingly volatile weather patterns caused by climate change and other factors. In other words, the current meteorology of Earth is characterized by a high-intensity focus on observing rapid, human-induced atmospheric changes and constantly altered & modified conditions. In summary, the present pattern of meteorology is an operational shift, merging with climatology, towards mitigating and adapting to a high-impact, rapidly warming, and historically record-breaking environment. With the help of local, regional & global organisations, such as, NOAA, WMO and others, utilization of high-tech satellite data, AI-driven modeling, and a focus on operational safety has been possible for the protection from the verge of extinction, for adaptability, evolution, existence and survival of mankind and other species, especially the endangered ones in this hostile environment.

The overall main theme of this day is prioritizing on weather, climate, and environmental protection, highlighting urgent climate change action, often featuring themes like “Early Warning and Early Action” and much more. This year, in 2026, their theme is: 

“Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow.”

Every year, this day commemorates the date of the establishment of the WMO in 1950, highlighting the role of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in safety, societal well-being, the importance of forecasting and surveiling for the protection of life and property, and much more. On this day of occasion, these celebrations feature a specific theme regarding topical weather, climate, or water through scientific conferences, webinars, public exhibitions, various club activities, workshops, rallies, award ceremonies, and social media campaigns. The day is also used to acknowledge outstanding contributions from young scientists, engineers, researchers and others in the field of meteorology. Not only that, many countries issue special postage stamps or cancelations to mark the day. Moreover, social media is used with viral hashtags like #MeteorologicalDay to spread awareness about the significance of the meteorological services.

The main spirit and motive of this day is to showcase research and discuss safety, conducting works, to remind and make people aware of the meteorology of our Earth. According to the United Nations and NASA, all these involve urgent action to circumscribe global warming to 1.5°C to avoid the worst climate impacts. This meteorology and our survival is inseparably interconnected and mutually dependent on each other. Hence, we should start working for stabilizing climate, reducing extreme weather frequency, and improving air quality. All these require a comprehensive approach concentrating on reducing greenhouse gases, restoring ecosystems, and utilizing advanced technological solutions. Afforestation, planned reforestation, prohibition of unplanned deforestation, cutting down hills and filling up the rivers & other water bodies, proper implementation of reduce-reuse-recycle method, regenerative agriculture and ecosystem restoration should be promoted. In addition, transition from non-renewable to renewable energy, electrifying transport and industry, introducing AI in forecasting and geo-engineering research have to be effectively enacted in all the countries of the world. Furthermore, arrangements of methane emission control, cloud seeding, fog dispersal, hail suppression, urban greening & amended and updated lawful enforcements regarding the conservation and reinstatement of our environment should be done by the legal authorities. Mass and social media should also be used appropriately to inspire & urge people to be conscious enough to care about our planet not for some mere temporary trends, but as a basic sense of decency, responsibility and humanity. These efforts, when initiated at global, local, and individual levels, are designed to reduce the “blanket” of gases in the atmosphere, sustaining Earth’s energy balance and meteorology. Therefore, we should emphasize this day, the meteorology and overall condition of our Earth for the welfare of every living being and work together accordingly.â™ģī¸
